The most important is the new guideline on UVA protection testing. There has always been the SPF rating. The SPF rating tells the protection of sunscreen against sunburn. But now, along with the SPF, there will be a rating of the sunscreens ability to protect against UVA rays, which is the one responsible for tanning, photo aging, and skin cancer. Why sunscreen rules are important? This new rule is important because UVA rays can suppress the skins immune system. This can lead to skin cancer. So for sunscreen to be effective, it has to protect against UVB, which is the burning spectrum, and UVA. What the Sunscreen Rules Mean to Consumers? Consumers will be able to easily see the sunscreens SPF number, as well as if the sunscreen protects against Broad Spectrum rays. The “Broad Spectrum” signifies that the sunscreen passed a pass/fail test for protection against UVA and UVB rays. The labeling for Broad Spectrum must be the same font, size, and on the same line as the SPF rating. Why the Sunscreen Rules were needed?
