This video was created for a class project in FCM 8420 Epidemiology at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Spring 2010 in order to address common misconceptions among parents and proper sun protection for their children. Many people believe having a tan and being outside in the sunlight are both fun and healthy, but few individuals realize that most sun damage occurs within the first 20 years of life. One large cross sectional study done in Germany on 1812 children (2-7 years old) who attended different day cares found a strong protective statically significant association between wearing more pieces of clothing (T-shirt, swimsuit/trunks, shorts) and the number of melnocytic nevi among the children. Additionally, a Canadian interventional randomized study evaluated the effect of applying sunscreen on the development of nevi in white school children in grades 1 and 4 and found that children in the interventional group developed less nevi after three years compared to the control group. Concerns about vitamin D deficiency have also arisen as a result of sun protection. Yet, sunscreen use has not been shown to negatively correlate with vitamin D levels. Ideally, sun exposure varies for each individual based on a variety of factors including skin type, diet and lifestyle. Minimizing intense sun exposure (10 am -4 pm), wearing long sleeve shirts, putting on more clothing pieces, and applying sunscreen were found to be effective in decreasing the risk of melanoma.
