06.01.11 (LAS CRUCES) — Leaders from Macarthur Elementary School in Las Cruces are helping students reduce the risk of skin cancer with a project that provides shelter from the sun. On the playground is where many students spend part of their school day, walking, running, or drippling a basketball, but it can also be a dangerous place to be. “Skin Cancer is very prevalent and we want to help provide a safe place for our students to be outside and enjoy the outdoors, but also to keep them safe from the sun or from heat stroke or from over exerting themselves in the sun,” said Carla Rodriguez, principal at Macarthur Elementary School, which recently received funding from the American Academy of Dermatology to build a new shade structure for its children. “Our students are always number one,” she said. The 00 grant gives students relief from the sun and a place to cool off when they’re at recess or exercising in gym class. “It is a safety issue because if kids get too hot, they can have heat frustration even in the summer and late spring. This allows us to give them that shade to be in,” said Stan Rounds, superintendent of Las Cruces Public Schools. PLEASE READ!!!!! I didn’t mean to offend anyone who uses Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunblock but it’s main active ingredient is Oxybenzone which can actually cause more harm than good. True, it’s non-greasy, photo-stable and absorbs UVB/UVA rays but at the same time it gets absorbed into your body and causes cell damage which can ultimately lead to cancer. It’s a toxic chemical. Stick to physical sunscreen if you have sensitive skin or if you’re prone to allergies because they sit on your skin and reflect harmful rays to protect. You don’t really need a high SPF sunscreen. Anything around SPF 30 is good enough! Higher SPF means more chemicals… and too much chemical is not a good thing. EDIT: I never said chemical sunscreens are bad. They are photo-stable and work very well. The only ingredient I was trying to raise awareness about is Oxybenzone. As I mentioned, it’s still pretty much controversial. If you use it and love it, then by all means.. stick with it. I just like to play it safe. Please keep in mind that I am here simply to acknowledge.
